Philosophy
Since the primary purpose of education is intellectual development, the General Education Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is designed to provide broad knowledge of diverse academic disciplines. The liberally educated person is able to think independently, to question, to analyze, to interpret, and to judge. To achieve these goals, the General Education Program encourages students to more fully develop their information literacy, communications, and quantitative reasoning skills. The program further encourages students to inquire into the disciplines of visual or performing arts, humanities, and the social and natural sciences. Finally, the program encourages students to instill the dispositions that prepare them to lead responsible and productive lives in a democratic, multicultural society, and to understand how to apply the knowledge gained to personal development as well as contemporary problems in the students' natural, social, economic, and political environments.
